10-12 days prior to Arbaeen, Shi'ite pilgrims from all over Iraq and other Muslim countries walks towards Karbala(although the important walking route is from Kufa to Karbala-which is about 80 km).
This rituals has a history as long as 680 AD itself,which just happen after the battle.
