🇨🇳🇦🇺 China, Australia Bust Tobacco Smuggling
Chinese customs said it conducted a joint enforcement operation with Australian border authorities to break up a transnational tobacco smuggling case. The operation seized more than 90 million cigarettes, with Australian authorities also intercepting 60 million smuggled cigarettes and 60 kg of tobacco leaf.
The case involved a network that attempted to conceal counterfeit tobacco products manufactured overseas within legitimate cargo before transshipping them through China to Australia. Earlier this year, under a nationwide anti-smuggling campaign, Zhanjiang customs dismantled nine illegal cigarette smuggling groups, shut nine storage sites, and seized more than 32 million cigarettes and over 1,100 e-cigarette units.
The investigation was advanced through China-Australia customs law enforcement cooperation channels, allowing both sides to act in parallel against the broader smuggling chain.
