During a public Turning Point USA event, a college student approaches the microphone, stating he drove four hours to debate conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The student, who identifies himself as a fourth-year English major at the University of Utah, argues that it is deeply disrespectful for Kirk to frequently label college a "scam."
To test the merit of the student's defense, Kirk asks a fundamental question for any English major: "What's your favorite Charles Dickens book?" After the student mumbles an entirely incoherent answer, Kirk graciously offers him another chance, asking him to name his favorite novel by Jane Austen. The student responds by saying, "Harry Potter," completely exposing his lack of basic knowledge regarding one of the most important authors in Western literature. As the student continues to fake his way through the conversation with literal gibberish, he eventually drops the act, admits he is "just mumbling," and asks Kirk to sign his shirt—a request Kirk politely declines.
This video serves as a highly effective and humorous demonstration of the conservative critique of modern higher education. By revealing that a fourth-year university student majoring in English cannot name a single work by foundational literary figures, the clip reinforces the argument that modern universities often fail to provide genuine educational value. It ultimately encourages audiences to question the academic establishment and prioritize actual competence over expensive institutional credentials.
