Almost minor error
3 years ago, in the catalog of one of the auctions in Spain, a lot by allegedly Jose de Ribera, the Spanish artist of the XVII century, appeared. The canvas depicted the crucified Christ, vacillating Pontius Pilate and a Roman soldier, clutching a red robe.
The stated price of the lot was $1,500.
Yet, some experts, upon closer examination of the picture, thought something else. As a result, the painting was seized until the authorship was determined.
And just this month it was found that the work was written by the great Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio) and is estimated at a value of about $50,000,000!
The restored painting will be on display at the Prado Museum until mid-October.
