Ukraine has officially notified the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that it considers Russian airspace unsafe for civilian flights due to increased military activity. Ukraine proposed that ICAO member states consider restrictions on civilian flights over Russia, and that airlines — take the risks into account when planning routes. Meanwhile, on 2 September ICAO issued a statement calling for stronger protection of civil aviation in areas of military conflict. The statement mentions neither Russia nor Ukraine. ICAO has also not announced the closure of Russian airspace and cannot close Russian airspace itself. In recent days, temporary restrictions on aircraft arrivals and departures have once again been introduced at Russian airports. In Moscow, this resulted in a large number of delays, cancellations and route changes. Before travelling, it is worth checking the status of your flight with the airline in advance.
