#Common_Mistakes 🌹🌹💐💐🍃🍃🍂🍂🍃🍃💐💐🌹🌹 INCORRECT: I WORE A JEANS. CORRECT: I WORE JEANS. / I WORE A PAIR OF JEANS. ✍The nouns jeans, pants, shorts, scissors and glasses are special. Although each word refers to one singular item, we can’t use “a” with these words. Instead, you can use no article or “a pair of.” If you want to talk about multiple items, say “two/three/four pairs of ____.” ✅She’s wearing glasses. ✅I bought a pair of shorts at the mall. ✅There’s a pair of scissors on my desk. ✅I have two pairs of white pants. ❤️🌹🍃🌹☺️🙏 🆔 @Englishlanguageclub

#Common_Mistakes 🌹🌹💐💐🍃🍃🍂🍂🍃🍃💐💐🌹🌹 🌹Before / Ago / Back Don’t say: “I sent the letter two months before.” Say: “I sent the letter two months ago.” Or: “I sent the letter two months back.” (informal) ✍Ago and back are used for past times from the present moment. Before is used for past times from another time in the past. 🌹Here are some examples of before: Yesterday I missed my train. I got to the train station at 7:10, but the train had left ten minutes before. I was very happy when I got this job last year, because I had lost my previous job six months before. ✍Ago and back (informal) are used for past times from the present moment: I graduated from high school ten years ago. ✍(ten years in the past from today) We sent the package three days ago. ✍(three days in the past from today) I moved here about five years back. ✍(informal – five years in the past from today) ✍Before and earlier are used for past times from another time in the past. Yesterday I missed my train. I got to the train station at 7:10, but the train had left ten minutes before. (or ten minutes earlier) ✍(= at 7:00, ten minutes before 7:10 yesterday) I was very happy when I got this job last June, because I had lost my previous job six months before. (or six months earlier). ✍(= six months before last June) ✍Use the simple past, not the present perfect, with ago. You say: ✅I started a new job a few weeks ago. Don’t say: I’ve started a new job a few weeks ago. ✍Don’t use a preposition such as ‘at’, ‘in’, or ‘on’ before a phrase with ago. You say: ✅They first met fifteen years ago. Don’t say: They first met at/in/fifteen years ago. ✍Don’t use ‘since’ or ‘before’ with ago. You say: ✅I came to the US two months ago. Don’t say: I came to the US since/before two months ago. ❤️🌹🍃🌹 ☺️🙏 🆔 @Englishlanguageclub

#Common_Mistakes 🌹🌹💐💐🍃🍃🍂🍂🍃🍃💐💐🌹🌹 🌹Part:Two 🌹raise OR rise? ✍The verbs raise and rise both refer to something going "up". ✍The main difference between them is that raise is transitive (it must have a direct object) and rise is intransitive (no direct object). Something raises something. Something rises. ✍We also note that: raise is regular: raise, raised, raised rise is irregular: rise, rose, risen raise (regular, transitive) raise, raised, raised, raising ✍If you raise something, it means that you elevate it - you move it up or lift it to a higher level. The government plans to raise the age of retirement from 65 to 67. If you have a question, please raise your hand. Mary raises her voice when she's angry. He raised his eyebrows, as if surprised. They have raised their prices every year since they were founded. The king's men were raising the drawbridge when it collapsed. ✍On this page we discuss the meanings of raise and rise that mainly cause confusion. ✍Both of these verbs have additional meanings that we do not discuss here. rise (irregular, intransitive) rise, rose, risen, rising ✍If something rises, it means that it elevates itself - it goes up itself. No external force is needed to lift it. But note that there is not always a physical movement; sometimes the meaning is just "to increase". I like to rise at 6am, but my husband stays in bed until 8am. If it doesn't stop raining, the river will rise and overflow. Hot air rises. John rose from his chair when Mary walked in. Jane has risen in her company very quickly and is now CEO. Prices are rising all the time. ✍To help you compare the meanings, here are some examples with raise and rise in the same sentence: We raise the flag when the sun rises, and we lower it when the sun goes down. Whenever our commanding officer comes in, we rise from our chairs and raise our hands in salute. The helicopter rose into the air, raising the survivors out of the water. ✍Important! There is some confusion over the nouns rise and raise when talking about pay or salary. In British English a (pay) rise is an increase in pay. In American English the word is (pay) raise. Did you get a 4% pay rise last year? (BrE) My boss said he's giving me a pay raise next month. (AmE) ❤️🌹🍃🌹☺️🙏 🆔 @Englishlanguageclub

#Common_Mistakes 🌹🌹💐💐🍃🍃🍂🍂🍃🍃💐💐🌹🌹 🌹Part:One 🌹Raise / Rise / Arise Don’t say: “The government is going to rise taxes.” Say: “The government is going to raise taxes.” ✍Rise means “to go up” or “to increase” – by itself. There is only a subject; there is no object. The sun rises at 6:00 AM. Energy consumption rose 20% this year. ✍Raise means “to move something to a higher position” or “to increase something,” so there are two entities, the subject (which performs the action) and the object (the thing that is moved or increased): I raised my hand to answer the teacher’s question. (subject = I; object = my hand) The state is raising the minimum age to get a driver’s license – from 16 to 18. (subject = the state; object = the minimum age to get a driver’s license) ✍Raise can also be used in a more metaphorical sense: He raised some objections to the project proposal. (= he expressed the objections) Our baseball team raised money for a local orphanage. (= collected money from donations) My parents raised their voices during the argument. (= spoke louder) The college is raising the bar for new applicants. (= increasing the standards) ✍Arise is similar to rise, but is more formal and abstract. It can also be used to mean “appear” or “result from”: Several important questions arose during the meeting. I’d like to work in Japan, if the opportunity arises. A new spirit of hope has arisen among the country’s people. Sorry, I’ll need to cancel our appointment. A few problems have arisen. ❤️🌹🍃🌹☺️🙏 🆔 @Englishlanguageclub
