The Books We Read
"The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh" (Ecclesiastes 12:9-13)
According to research, Russians read about 10 books a year on average. If we take 60 years as the active reading period, that adds up to 600 books over a lifetime. There is also more precise - though not entirely typical - data available. For example, the American Dan Pelzer meticulously recorded every book he read over 63 years, arriving at a total of 3,599 books. An even more impressive reading record belongs to British Prime Minister William Gladstone (1809-1898), who read 22,000 books in his lifetime.
But as we know, with the mass spread of newspapers and magazines, and later the Internet, people started reading more than just books. How has this affected the quality of the texts we read - have they become more superficial and shallow? What's more useful for self-development: skimming the main ideas of several books, or reading one book thoughtfully? Does it matter much whether we read a book on paper or on screen? Does listening to an audiobook version replace reading the book itself?
