A new road sign in France could help save one of the country’s rarest wild animals. From September, lynx warning signs will appear on stretches of the N5 and N57 and other roads across Ain, Doubs and Jura as part of a three-year trial to see whether they can reduce vehicle collisions with Eurasian lynx, which are classified as endangered in France. The Haut-Jura is an obvious testing ground: the Jura massif is home to nearly 80% of the country’s lynx population, with an estimated 80–100 animals living in the area. Sometimes protecting a species may begin with something surprisingly simple - persuading drivers to ease off the accelerator.
