A turtle that can weigh more than 40 kilograms and deliver a powerful bite is spreading across southern France. Wildlife officials say sightings of invasive common snapping turtles have increased in the Pyrénées-Orientales, where the species has already been breeding for several years, and it has now been recorded in 29 French departments. Native to North America, the turtles have no natural predators in France, posing a growing threat to local wildlife through predation, competition and the spread of diseases, while authorities urge people not to handle them and to report sightings with photos and location details. Sometimes the biggest environmental challenge arrives one abandoned pet at a time.
