When disaster forces hundreds of thousands from their homes, even a spare room can become a lifeline. France's ICI Gironde has launched a solidarity campaign inviting residents, businesses and local authorities to offer temporary accommodation for people displaced by the devastating Gironde wildfires. Housing offers submitted by phone, WhatsApp or the broadcaster's website will be passed to authorities and humanitarian organisations within 24 hours to help families as quickly as possible, after the fires forced around 220,000 people to evacuate. Sometimes the fastest emergency response begins not with the government, but with a neighbour opening a door.
