Millions of mosquitoes have descended on southern France after flooding triggered a massive hatch around a Mediterranean lagoon. Strong sea winds raised water levels near Leucate, flooding more than 250 hectares and causing Aedes caspius mosquitoes to emerge in huge numbers, with officials reporting thousands of larvae per square metre in some areas. Despite aerial treatment covering 37 hectares, some insects survived, leaving residents to endure a temporary invasion that authorities expect to ease within days. The outbreak isn't linked to the disease-carrying Asian tiger mosquito, but it comes as France remains on heightened alert for imported cases of dengue, chikungunya and Zika-proof that even a summer on the French coast can bring an unexpected kind of buzz.
