Hot summers have a way of changing government priorities, and in France they're already making home upgrades cheaper. From July 18, VAT on eligible reversible air-to-air heat pumps, which provide both heating and cooling, has been cut from 20% to 5.5%, saving households several hundred euros depending on the system they install. The tax break applies only to energy-efficient models that meet new technical and environmental standards, and some low-income families can also receive grants of up to €1,500. It’s an early move in France’s climate strategy, but after recent heatwaves, staying cool has become less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
