Вроде бы все легко и просто, но... Вспомним, что в русской орфографии существует список глаголов-исключений с суффиксом «-а-», относящихся ко второму спряжению. Как раз в эту группу и входит глагол «слышать». Глагол изменяется по второму типу спряжения. Его форма в третьем лице множественного числа имеет безударное личное окончание «-ат» — слышат.
