Apple briefly removed Telegram from the App Store on Monday after a malicious user planted illegal content, specifically child sexual abuse material. The 40-minute takedown and subsequent restoration highlights the ongoing tension between platform security requirements and the realities of moderating global messaging services at scale.
The incident involved a single account that Telegram banned immediately upon identification. This highlights the vulnerability of open-platform communication to bad actors. Telegram reports it cleared over 337,900 CSAM-related groups and channels in 2026, a significant increase from 29,640 removals throughout 2025.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, criticized Apple’s distribution power, calling the removal a caprice that disrupts access for millions. This event echoes a February 2018 incident, where Apple pulled both Telegram and Telegram X until the developers implemented stricter content safeguards.
Given the sheer volume of traffic on the network, developers should expect increasingly automated, often blunt, moderation triggers from platform gatekeepers. We are likely looking at a future where app distribution remains perpetually hostage to these high-stakes compliance cycles.
