Google adds Motion Assist to Android 17
Google is integrating Motion Assist into Android 17, a feature designed to mitigate motion sickness for passengers interacting with their devices in transit. The functionality uses internal sensors to provide visual cues that help the brain reconcile sensory input.
The feature utilizes the smartphone's accelerometer and gyroscope to project subtle markers on the display. These markers synchronize with the vehicle's movement, providing a frame of reference that reduces physical discomfort.
The science behind these magic dots is sound, and addresses the motion sickness felt when staring at a static display while the inner ear feels the car turning, braking, and accelerating.
This implementation is a direct response to Apple's Motion Cues, which launched in 2024. While Apple established this specific UI interaction, the current Google rollout is restricted exclusively to Pixel hardware.
A simple UI tweak can effectively solve a persistent physiological annoyance.
