IDP Education’s FY2026 results paint a troubling picture for its IELTS business. IDP delivered 1.195 million IELTS tests, down 8% year-on-year. Volumes collapsed 22% in India and declined another 3% outside India, including falls in Iran and Canada. This happened despite IDP entering China and opening 13 new test centres there. Perhaps even more strikingly, IDP’s global IELTS venue network has reportedly fallen from around 1,500 venues to just 600. The company says cost reductions have included moving some countries from direct operations to third-party models — and exiting certain countries altogether. There were a few brighter spots: IELTS volumes increased 8% in Australia, with growth also reported in Kazakhstan, the UAE and Kenya. IDP is promising further expansion in China and new initiatives such as “Computer Mediated Speaking,” which appears largely to mean greater use of video-call Speaking tests. Another planned “innovation” is IOCP: candidates taking IELTS on computer would see the Writing task on screen but write their answers on paper. Meanwhile, the average IDP IELTS test fee increased 2% to AUD $325.30. The wider competitive picture is difficult to ignore. IELTS volumes fell 8% while PTE volumes have broadly stabilised and smaller competitors continue to grow. And investors do not appear impressed either: IDP shares were down around 27% following the results. Fewer IELTS tests. Hundreds fewer venues. Market exits. Cost cutting.
