Ireland is generating more renewable energy than ever, but it still can't shake its dependence on imported fuel. A new energy security report says imported fossil fuels covered 78% of the country's energy needs last year, with all of its oil and more than 82% of its gas coming from abroad-well above the EU average. Solar power was the standout success, surging 50% in a year, while wind energy continued to grow more slowly, helping push energy-related emissions to a record low. The direction is encouraging, but the figures show Ireland still has a long road ahead before clean energy can truly replace imported fossil fuels.
