Ireland’s childbirth guidelines have come under fire after a former leading obstetrician warned they could delay care for some mothers and babies. Dr Peter Boylan says the current rules treat labour as officially established only when the cervix has dilated to four centimetres, which he believes could mean some women are sent home or monitored too late. He has urged the Health Minister to review the guidance, pointing to lessons from the UK's Ockenden maternity report, which linked failures in maternity care to preventable harm. The debate highlights a simple but important question: recognising labour at the right time can make all the difference for both mother and child.
