Fewer children are starting school in Ireland, and classrooms are already beginning to feel the impact. As primary schools close for the summer on , five rural schools are shutting permanently, while preliminary figures show the loss of 381 teaching posts nationwide as enrolment continues to fall. Many schools are being forced to merge classes, meaning children who were once in groups of around 20 students could soon find themselves in classrooms of more than 30. Demographics may seem like slow-moving statistics, but for pupils, parents and teachers, the effects are arriving much faster than expected.
