The English word "skunk" is from an unidentified New England Algonquin language, perhaps Massachusett. The word was recorded as "segonku" and later "squunck", and is likely closely related to Abenaki "segôgw". The word literally translates as "piss fox". In the related Miami-Illinois language, the word became "sikaawa", which referred to skunks and by extension, the strong smelling wild leek, Allium tricoccum. One area apparently known for its plentiful wild leeks was a forested stretch along the coast of Lake Michigan, which was explored by the French and first recorded as "Checagou" in 1687. The area eventually came under US American control and around 1790 a settlement was founded there by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a French-African man probably born in what is now Haiti. The Native Americans of the area were then forcibly removed and a town began to grow, eventually forming the modern City of Chicago. So Chicago means "(place of) wild leeks", and ultimately comes from a word meaning "skunk", composed of roots translating as "piss fox". Ссылка скрыта
