#job Research engineer in machine translation. FAIR (Meta), Paris, onsite. Full description: Ссылка скрыта We are looking for someone with scientific and engineering background in NLP to join our small but proud team working on language technologies, specifically, machine translation. You will be dealing with multilingual LLMs, training and evaluating translation models, collecting and processing new translation-related datasets, helping release some of them in opensource, and writing scientific publications about all of this. The level can be middle to senior; master’s degree in computer science or similarly relevant field is required. A sample of things you might need to know: how to read a parquet dataset, how to launch tasks with Slurm, how to train a model in a fully sharded data parallel mode, what's wrong with the NLLB tokenizer, what is the difference between LaBSE and SONAR encoders, with which metrics you could evaluate the quality of Spanish-to-Quechua translation, and how to submit papers to ARR. You'll be writing and debugging a lot of Python code (and maybe occasionally read some C++), reviewing pull requests of other engineers, and constructively complaining about bugs of fairseq2. You will be working fulltime, with at least 3 days per week in the Paris office of Meta (most likely, observing the Palais Brongniart from the window). The work/life balance is halfway between what you would expect in big tech in the US and in academia in France. A few times per week, you'll be staying late to talk to the colleagues from the West Coast. BTW, there might be more meetings than you are used to. The working language is English, but you'll also hear some French (and maybe occasionally Russian, Spanish and Catalan). The salary is fair; it won't push you to the highest French income tax bracket until you start selling the granted stocks (which may contribute to roughly a half of total remuneration, but would become liquid only in 2-3 years). If you are not yet in France, you may get some help with relocation. Please use the link above to apply. If you have any questions, contact @cointegrated.
