#fellowship #Germany The DFG-funded Centre for Advanced Studies ‘Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices from a Global Perspective’ at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is seeking to appoint several Junior and Senior Fellowships for 3-12 Months The main goal of the Center for Advanced Studies – Erlangen (CAS-E) is to compare the interpretation, rationalization and legitimization strategies of esoteric practices and their practitioners from a global perspective, and to carve out why and in which ways they are successful, resilient and creative in different cultural and regional contexts. A mid-term goal is the development of a cultural theory of esoteric practices, which seeks to explain their resilience, their typological family resemblances across a large number of cases, and their different culture-bound and politically shaped evaluations. The Center has a decidedly global and contemporary research focus and adopts a broad heuristic working definition of ‘esoteric practices’ which includes a variety of aspects such as contingency management, specialization and the formation of expert systems, secrecy, the reliance on opaque efficacy as well as social dynamics of inclusion and exclusion. Simultaneously, CAS-E also comparatively investigates creative reinventions of traditional ‘esoteric practices’ that acquire new hybridizing forms in fields of tension with competing cultural registers (e.g. science, new technologies/media, political regimes, religious orthodoxies) which may contribute to their (re-)legitimation. #postdoc #STS #Germany TU Munich, STS Department Postdoctoral Researcher in Ethnographic Science and Technology Studies (TV-L E13, 6-year contract (2+4)) Our group – Ссылка скрыта – pursues three routes of inquiry: first and foremost, we are working on an empirically grounded understanding of ‘green chemistry’ in Germany and beyond as an emerging field of science, industry, and regulation; second, we use ‘green chemistry’ as an example for inquiring into the ways late industrial societies inhabit bodies and environments at the level of molecular structure; third, we reflect more broadly whether ‘the Anthropocene’ requires scientific practices and knowledges beyond the Western modern notion of ‘progress’, and what this might mean for molecular, legal, and economic design. We are looking to recruit someone with a longer-term perspective who adds to the diversity of our group and has an interest in jointly shaping our profile in Munich and internationally. We are thus very open regarding the profile of a successful applicant and are not looking to fill a clearly defined gap. An excellent PhD and experience in empirical research are vital. Experience in relevant research fields of chemistry, the life sciences, law and regulation, industry and markets, or broader questions of political economy are desirable. We also, however, value applications by scholars who can relate to these fields without actually having worked in them. We welcome a broad spectrum of epistemologies and methods.
