Debt-fueled dividends lead to bankruptcy
When the payout ratio exceeds 100%, a company begins paying dividends from debt or reserves. This is a sure sign that the business is no longer generating enough cash to support its dividend policy.
Investors who see such payments as "stability" are actually looking at financial suicide. Increasing debt load to maintain an image of reliability is the worst strategy imaginable during a period of high borrowing costs.
