Ranthambore Fort is easily one of the most fascinating forts in India. What makes it even more special is that it sits right inside Ranthambore National Park, so you’re literally surrounded by history and wildlife at the same time. The fort goes all the way back to the 10th century and was built by the Chauhan rulers. Over time, it became a stronghold of the Rajputs and saw many important battles. One name you’ll always hear with this fort is Hammir Dev Chauhan. He ruled here in the 13th century and is remembered for his courage and refusal to surrender, even in the face of powerful enemies. Probably the most talked-about event is when Alauddin Khilji attacked the fort in 1301. After a long and intense siege, he finally captured it. This moment really changed the course of the fort’s history. Another interesting thing is its location. The fort is built on a hill about 700 feet high, which gave it a huge advantage back then. With dense forests all around, it wasn’t easy for enemies to even reach it, let alone attack. Today, the fort is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the “Hill Forts of Rajasthan.” And honestly, it deserves that tag. What makes Ranthambore different from other forts is the setting. You might actually spot wildlife, sometimes even tigers, around the area, which is something you don’t usually associate with historic forts. These forests have a long legacy too. They were once royal hunting grounds, but in the 20th century they were protected and eventually became part of Project Tiger in 1973. This marked the beginning of Ranthambore’s identity as a modern tiger reserve, which has now been preserved for over half a century. Inside the fort, there’s also the well-known Trinetra Ganesh Temple. It’s considered one of the oldest Ganesh temples in Rajasthan and still attracts a lot of devotees. Overall, Ranthambore Fort isn’t just about old walls. It’s a place where history, bravery, and centuries-old wilderness come together, making it truly unique.
