the “4X Rule” Suppose you already own something worth ₹100. Instead of repeatedly upgrading to ₹120, ₹150, ₹180 versions, wait, save, and eventually buy something substantially better—say ₹400. The exact “4X” number is not the scientific point. The principle is: Avoid marginal upgrades → accumulate resources → spend on transformative improvements or meaningful experiences. Why small upgrades stop making us happy The article connects this with hedonic adaptation. When we buy a slightly better: phone, watch, car, furniture, we initially feel excited. But the brain quickly normalises the improvement, so the new product soon feels ordinary. Thus: Purchase → excitement → adaptation → dissatisfaction → another purchase This creates a consumption treadmill. A phone with a marginally better camera or faster processor may feel exciting for a few days, but soon it becomes psychologically similar to the previous phone. Why large changes may feel different The author argues that our minds notice contrast more than continuity. So instead of upgrading every year, waiting several years and making a substantial upgrade produces a much stronger psychological contrast: Old experience → major change → “Aha!” experience The purchase then feels like an occasion or achievement, rather than just another routine transaction. Delayed gratification also adds value An important psychological point in the article is that waiting itself can increase enjoyment. When we postpone a purchase, we: research → compare → discuss → anticipate → finally purchase. Therefore, pleasure does not come only from possessing the object. Anticipation itself becomes part of the reward. This connects well with ideas of delayed gratification and self-control. Experiences > possessions instead of accumulating more objects, spending on meaningful experiences may produce more lasting happiness. The 4X Rule is therefore not really about buying expensive things. It is about moving from: Impulse → accumulation → hedonic adaptation. towards: Patience → intentional consumption → meaningful experiences The key question suggested by the article is essentially: Join the best Telegram channel on Psychology Optional 👇👇👇👇👇 Join: @upscpsychology1
