Political extremism is a nonsense term.
The frequently heard argument “There are no good extremes” sounds morally clean, but it does not withstand scrutiny. “Extreme” is not a substance; it is a relative position on an arbitrarily drawn scale. What counts as extreme today was mainstream yesterday — and vice versa. The scale itself is defined by those currently in power and constantly shifts.
Anyone who uses “extremism” as a categorical accusation replaces substantive debate with a mere positioning. Whether a position is good or bad depends on its principles, consequences, and justifications — not on how far it sits from the current average of opinion. Moderate nonsense remains nonsense. A radical yet coherent and well-reasoned position remains a position that must be refuted, not disposed of with the label “extreme.”
The term primarily serves discourse control: it delegitimizes without arguing.
