We're all taught that fire smoke is toxic, however lithium-ion battery fires can introduce additional chemical hazards that we need to understand, of course all of our emergency services included. Any fire can produce a complex mixture of toxic gases and combustion products, a conventional house fire that's well established or ICE vehicle can expose people to carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, particulates and many other harmful substances, depending on what is burning. But a lithium-ion battery fire can introduce an additional chemical hazard, when lithium-ion batteries undergo thermal runaway and burn, they release a range of toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride (HF). And this is where it becomes particularly concerning. Hydrogen fluoride is highly toxic, when it comes into contact with water or moisture, it forms hydrofluoric acid. @bajanfirenet #safety
