COVID-19 Outbreak Aboard Carnival Spirit – Carnival Cruise Line Refuses to Disclose Number of Infected Guests and Crew A number of newspapers are reporting today that the Carnival Spirit cruise ship experienced a COVID-19 outbreak. As usual, Carnival Cruise Line refused to respond to requests regarding the number of infected passengers and crew members. You’ll no longer need a ‘green pass’ to move throughout Italy With just weeks to go before we can officially say the summer travel season is underway, Italy joined the list of countries that have greatly relaxed COVID-19 restrictions as the month of May kicks off. The country was among the hardest hit in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, it has spent a good portion of the last couple of years with tight restrictions that have governed not just who can cross its borders, but where they can go. As of May 1, though, Italy removed the requirement that tourists (and residents) display a “green pass” to get into just about anywhere you would want to go if you were visiting the country. You’ll still need to upload some documentation to get into the country. However, the entry requirements are pretty flexible to allow for both vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors.

Airlines Tickets Are Now 11% Higher Than They Were Pre-Pandemic Just like so many other things in the U.S., the price of travel is increasing. The average U.S. round-trip air ticket price for March 2022 was $540, a 41% increase from $382 in March 2021 and an 11% increase from March 2019 when the average ticket was $487. That’s according to new data released from the Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) this week. According to ARC, the $540 price tag is the highest average ticket price since June 2015, when the average ticket price was $548. And even with the increases, consumers are still more than willing to spend in order to travel. The total ticket sales by accredited travel agencies for March 2022 was $7.8 billion, a 180% increase from March 2021 and the first time sales have eclipsed $7 billion since February 2020. That number was also up 45% just from February. ARC, in its release, said that the growth was fueled by almost every single segment, including domestic trips (up 25% month-over-month.)

The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) this week emphasized that, even with the lifting of the mandate, the biggest barrier to full recovery of international travel remains—the inbound testing rule.ASTA on Friday praised a push by a bipartisan group of 16 Members of Congress to drop the rule for vaccinated travelers, something it said would not only be consistent with the scientific consensus but would also allow “the travel industry’s recovery to begin in earnest.” That group is led by Representative Lou Correa (D-CA) and includes names from both sides of the aisle. “The current back and forth on the mask mandate pertaining to various forms of transportation misses the mark and overshadows very real policies deterring international travel. Requiring Americans to test negative prior to returning home from abroad is the public policy that needs immediate reversal,” ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby said in a statement.
