France’s plan to keep children under 15 off social media has been stopped just weeks before it was due to begin. The Constitutional Council struck down the ban, which would have blocked new accounts from September and closed existing ones from January 2027, ruling that it placed a disproportionate restriction on freedom of expression and communication while also raising privacy concerns over age verification. Judges said the law was too broad, failed to consider children’s age, maturity or family circumstances, and gave parents no way to allow access when appropriate. The separate plan to ban mobile phones in French middle schools from September 1 was not part of the ruling - so France’s wider battle over children and screens is far from over.
