France gets a public holiday on August 15, but this year the calendar has stolen much of the benefit. Assumption Day, the Catholic feast marking the assumption of Mary into heaven, falls on a Saturday in 2026, meaning most Monday-to-Friday workers will not gain an extra day off. Offices and many businesses are expected to close, but supermarkets, major retailers, boutiques, restaurants and tourist venues can remain open, often with reduced Sunday-style hours - unlike May 1, the only French public holiday when closure is generally compulsory. There may still be church processions, markets, fairs and local celebrations, but for many workers the biggest tradition this year will simply be watching a public holiday disappear into the weekend.
