A tiny beetle no bigger than a coin is raising big concerns across France. Authorities have stepped up surveillance after the invasive Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica, was detected this summer in Bas-Rhin, Alpes-Maritimes and the Bourgogne–Franche-Comté region, following its first appearance in the country in 2025. Researchers warn the pest, which can seriously damage crops, gardens and natural ecosystems, may ultimately prove impossible to stop, making early detection and public reporting more important than ever. Sometimes the smallest invaders create the biggest problems.
