Working later in life is becoming the new normal in France, where employment among people aged 60–64 has climbed to its highest level in 50 years. The employment rate for this age group reached 44.4% in 2025, a rise largely linked to the 2023 pension reform that increased the retirement age from 62 to 64 and extended contribution requirements for full pensions. While France still trails many European countries, the shift marks a dramatic turnaround after decades in which older workers steadily disappeared from the labor market. Retirement may be arriving later, but for many French workers, so are new career opportunities.
