A summer escape near Bordeaux has turned into a large-scale evacuation as a powerful wildfire forces 12,000 tourists and residents from campsites and nearby communities. The blaze, burning near the Arcachon Bay since Wednesday, has already consumed around 2,000 hectares, though no casualties have been reported so far. Authorities have banned forestry work and other activities involving combustion engines as dry conditions, heat and dense pine forests help the flames spread with unusual intensity. France has recorded more than 12,500 fires and 44,000 hectares burned this year-a reminder that the country's wildfire season is no longer waiting for late summer to begin.
