France's latest farm reform has turned into a battle over pesticides as much as agriculture itself. Lawmakers have approved an emergency agriculture bill that could allow the temporary use of two pesticides banned in France but still permitted elsewhere in the European Union, arguing the move would help French farmers compete on equal terms. The proposal has triggered fierce opposition from environmental groups and even some members of the governing coalition, who warn it could weaken health and environmental protections, while supporters insist any approvals would remain limited and science-based. In France, it seems even a law meant to help farmers can end up cultivating a political storm.
