A popular IELTS topic in all 3 parts.
Could be a pain in the neck for your learner, so....here you are)
Lead-in for your classes:
➡️Show the photos and ask which ones students know. Then match the names with the photos and present/drill pronunciation:
La Pedrera /peˈdrɛərə/ (Barcelona)
Dancing House (Prague)
Forbidden City (Beijing)
Saint Basil's Cathedral
Angkor Wat ˌæŋkɔː ˈwɒt (Cambodia) wat like what
Ask the learner which ones they want to see and why.
➡️Present and ask the learner to use this language:
If I get the chance, I’d love to see ...
it has amazing architecture
historic buildings
It’s the most stunning piece of architecture I’ve ever seen.

elegant lines and unusual shapes
➡️Then give this task:
Part 2
Describe an interesting building
You should say:
Where it is
What it looks like
What function it has
And explain why you think it is interesting
➡️Give these sentence starters and model/drill pronunciation:
I’d like to talk about .... which is a pretty famous building in ....
When it comes to what it looks like, it’s a...
In terms of its function, it’s just a ... (tourist attraction with places for people to...)
As for why I think it’s interesting, I think it’s the .... (combination of the iconic design and the history of the place).

Ask these questions and then ask the learner to use the words:
What types of buildings are popular in your country?
highrise buildings
apartment blocks
quiet cottages and detatched houses in the countryside
Why do people like to visit historical sites?
the history behind them draws people in
Is it more important for a building to look good on the outside or on the inside?
people want to live in something that looks good on the inside
Perhaps, it doesn’t matter if it has a shabby interior
