Thousands of people in Ireland could be drinking water from private supplies that are never tested for contamination, prompting fresh warnings from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA wants all private drinking water sources to be legally registered with local authorities and regularly monitored, saying too many systems remain outside official oversight despite serving schools, care homes, hotels, campsites and other public facilities. Its latest report found that nearly 20,000 people received water exceeding legal limits for trihalomethanes in 2025, almost 2,000 were supplied by systems that failed E. coli standards, and more than 40% of supplies failing E. coli tests had also failed the year before. Clean water is easy to take for granted-until nobody can say for certain that it's safe.
