Ireland's wildfire risk is exposing what some experts say are outdated environmental laws. Following a major wildfire in County Tipperary, conservationists are urging the government to modernise 30-year-old rules on land burning, arguing that current penalties are too weak to deter illegal fires as climate change makes wildfires more frequent and severe. Environmental specialists also warn that degraded peatlands, large single-species forests and prolonged drought are increasing the danger, while the loss of flowers and water is putting additional pressure on bees and other pollinating insects. For Ireland, preventing the next wildfire may depend as much on changing land management as on fighting the flames.
