Even a disposable barbecue could soon come with a four-figure price tag. Ireland is preparing a new National Parks Bill that would give park rangers the power to issue on-the-spot fines-potentially up to €1,000-for reckless behaviour such as using disposable grills during wildfire warnings, replacing a system where rangers can currently do little more than confiscate equipment. The government says the law will create the country's first comprehensive legal framework for managing, protecting and restoring national parks, bringing Ireland closer to international best practice after recent fires damaged wildlife habitats in Killarney National Park. Sometimes protecting nature starts not with planting trees, but with making people think twice before lighting a fire.
