Forgetting to return an empty bottle is starting to add up-to the tune of €120 million. Ireland's Re-turn deposit scheme says more than €120 million in refunds went unclaimed during its first two years because millions of bottles and cans were never returned, while retailers told lawmakers it can take at least five years for return machines to pay for themselves. The parliamentary hearing also focused on concerns that some people with disabilities still struggle to use the machines, despite accessibility being a legal requirement. It's a reminder that even successful recycling schemes aren't judged only by how much they collect, but by how easy they are for everyone to use.
