A simple gift card mistake is about to put nearly €250,000 back into shoppers’ hands. JD Sports has agreed to reissue more than 5,600 gift cards sold online in Ireland after they were mistakenly given a one-year expiry date instead of the five years required by Irish law. The affected cards were purchased between late 2019 and late 2025, and the retailer says it will contact eligible customers and replace the expired balances by January 2027. It’s a timely reminder that consumer protection laws only work when someone makes sure companies actually follow them.
