Ireland is racing against time to save one of its most iconic birds from disappearing forever. Conservationists have released 20 young curlews into the wild after raising them from eggs collected in England, marking the first stage of an ambitious programme designed to reverse a 98% collapse in Ireland’s breeding population since the 1980s. The chicks are being released on predator-free lake islands, with some fitted with GPS trackers to monitor their survival and, hopefully, their return to breed in a few years. Sometimes giving nature a second chance means stepping in just long enough for it to recover on its own.
