Court Strikes Out Petition Challenging Mzee Atwoli’s Re-election As COTU Boss
Francis Atwoli has received a major boost after the Employment and Labour Relations Court struck out a petition challenging his re-election as Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU-K).
Justice Jemimah Keli ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction to determine the case filed by Fazul Mahamed and the Institute for Democratic Governance.
The petitioners had challenged Atwoli’s March 14, 2026 re-election, arguing that affiliate unions had not completed their electoral processes.
Atwoli was re-elected unopposed for a sixth term, extending his leadership of COTU, which he has headed since 2001.
