Alpha by Julia Ducournau
Third Julia Ducounau’s movie is quite intense. Think of Larry Clark’s Kids reimagined for the 21st century, a new sweeping blood-borne AIDS-like virus spreading like the wind, from gay bars and dirty needles to public schools. The red wind rises.
Less brutal and less insane than Titane, Ducounau’s Cannes triumph, yet very beautifully made, for those who ain’t afraid of arthouse body horror. The best of its kind.
Ducourau’s debut film Raw is surely on my watchlist.
PS: … and I disagree with referencing David Cronenberg in connection with Ducounau’s films. Sure, a part of the form - deformities and flesh wounds - is similar, but it’s just the form - the vibe is totally different, much less pensive and surreal, more intense and brutal.
