August 12, 2026 is an unusually active skywatching date. The major events are: Total solar eclipse — Totality crosses northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic, Spain, and a small corner of Portugal. Much of the Northern Hemisphere sees a partial eclipse. NASA lists totality around 5:48–5:49 p.m. in Reykjavík and around 8:28–8:33 p.m. in parts of Spain, making Spain's eclipse especially dramatic near sunset. Perseid meteor shower peak — The Perseids peak during the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13. Conditions are particularly favorable in 2026 because the peak coincides with a new Moon, meaning little moonlight interferes with the meteors. Under ideal dark skies, rates can approach roughly 100 meteors per hour. Six-planet morning alignment — Around August 12, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune are spread across the predawn sky. Uranus and Neptune require optical aid; the brighter planets are easier targets. New Moon — The Moon is essentially new because it is passing directly between Earth and the Sun to produce the eclipse. This is also why the nighttime sky is exceptionally dark for the Perseids. Sunset eclipse in Europe — In parts of Spain and elsewhere along the western eclipse region, the Sun approaches or reaches the horizon while eclipsed, producing an unusual eclipsed-sunset appearance.
