Oktoberfest begins in Munich on 19 September. It will run until 4 October. Entry is free; a mug of beer costs €14.80–15.90.
The festival dates back to 1810, when it was organised to celebrate the wedding of the Bavarian Prince Ludwig and Princess Theresa. Beer was introduced later, but it was this that made the festival famous. Nowadays, only six Munich brands are served at the festival, and up to 7 million litres are consumed over the season.
The first mug is poured after the traditional tapping of the keg by the mayor.
