Why are turtles released far from the shore? It’s not cruelty, but a survival drill
The journey helps them memorise the beach’s magnetic ‘imprint’ so they can return in 20 years’ time to lay their eggs; it warms up their muscles and lungs before the long swim; and it trains their ability to navigate using light and gravity.
Releasing them into the water too early deprives them of these skills.
