Before modern navigation instruments became widespread, sailors often relied on lead lines to determine the depth of coastal waters. A weighted rope was lowered from a vessel until the weight reached the seabed. Marks placed at regular intervals on the rope allowed sailors to estimate depth, while material attached to the weight could collect samples of the seafloor. These measurements helped navigators identify dangerous shallows, locate suitable anchorages, and compare their position with information recorded on nautical charts. The method was particularly valuable near unfamiliar coastlines, where a seemingly small error in depth could damage a vessel. Lead lines therefore provided both navigational information and an early means of systematically studying underwater geography.
