Iraqis have special role in this rituals,as they are host to about 20-40 million pilgrims. Almost entire road from Kufa to Karbala is filled with camps and houses, which serves as sleeping, showering and even feeding place to pilgrims. As you walk in the route, they hail you,and want to give you food, water, tea, coffee or fruits(sometimes they beg you to take one of those). All of these happen completely free. Despite the huge numbers of pilgrims, you won't be thirsty or hungry.there is always food, water, sleeping place and shower available for everyone. This 80km walking -despite hot weather of Iraq at that time - is among one of coolest travel I've ever had. One can end the walking in 2 days, but most of people prefer to do it in 3-4 days. As I said before,Islamic year is not fixed on solar year, and it rotates year by year.So next arbaeen will be 11 days prior to this one, which become close to hot weather of summer.

10-12 days prior to Arbaeen, Shi'ite pilgrims from all over Iraq and other Muslim countries walks towards Karbala(although the important walking route is from Kufa to Karbala-which is about 80 km). This rituals has a history as long as 680 AD itself, which just happen after the battle.

Note those rock reliefs on the Tomb entrance and inside. These are based on stories inside Shahnameh such as battle of Iran and Turan, the moment Rostam kill Esfandiar(the guy with an arrow in his eyes is Esfandiar) and the battle of Rostam with dragon. I will explain more about Shahnameh and it's characters later.

Tomb of Ferdowsi In a small village named Tus - about 20 km north of Mashhad - there is a buried man who had a special impact on Iranian culture and Persian language (Farsi). Abul-Qasim Ferdowsi Tusi - better known as "Ferdowsi" - was a Persian poet and author of Shahnameh (Book of King) Ferdowsi was born in 940 in paj village, near the city of Tus and passed away in 1025. Tus was a great city until the invasion of Mongols. After that, it was getting declined and Mashhad became increasingly important. Ferdowsi's role in Iranian culture is unique: it's because of his works that Persian language is alive today, and getting used in many countries around Iran (such as Afghanistan, Tajikistan, etc) . all Iranian poets afterwards (e.g. Hafiz, Saadi) worked on the foundation he made and brought farsi to perfection. I'll explain more about him and his works in future. I shot this images in a cloudy day. most of images are taken in tomb yard. Last one is grave of Ferdowsi. Tus,Mashhad,North East Iran August 2022
