🇮🇩 Army unit set for Natuna
Indonesia’s army will inaugurate Composite Battalion 1/Gardapati in Natuna, Riau Islands, after completing its organisational adjustment following an eight-year trial period. The battalion is intended to strengthen defence in the North Natuna Sea and support a new military command for the province, according to plans announced by the army.
Gardapati is a multi-corps battalion under the North Natuna Sea Security Task Force, designed for integrated ground defence and border security. The move is part of a broader plan to establish five new military commands by 2026, including a separate command for the Riau Islands, reflecting Jakarta’s effort to expand force structure in a strategically sensitive maritime area.
The new battalion and command structure add to Indonesia’s military footprint in North Natuna Sea. The plan has also prompted debate over its strategic necessity and regional impact.
