Jared Kaplan, co-founder of Anthropic, shares how his journey in AI began after a career in theoretical physics
For most of his career, he explored deep questions in physics
He wanted to understand the universe and uncover its biggest mysteries like determinism and free will
Inspired by his mother, a science fiction writer, he dreamed of faster-than-light travel
Over time, he went deep into various areas of physics, including string theory, cosmology, and particle physics
But he started to feel frustrated
Progress in physics felt slow, and he eventually grew bored with it
Friends in the AI field encouraged him to take a look at what was happening in machine learning
At first, he was skeptical, thinking of outdated methods like SVMs from his school days
But the excitement surrounding AI eventually convinced him
Thanks to connections with pioneers in AI, many of whom went on to co-found Anthropic, Jared transitioned to working in artificial intelligence
He found AI to be the fast-moving and impactful field he’d been searching for
